Since 2012, the Lowline Young Designers Program (YDP) has grown organically out of interest and enthusiasm among local parents, educators, and community leaders, seeing the Lowline as not only extraordinarily exciting to young people, but a way to give these young people a voice in determining the kind of public space they would like the Lowline to become. ??It has so far reached over 1,000 students, providing unique access to innovative, experiential education in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). ??

We have also hosted two community exhibits and workshops, one in 2014 and one in 2015, to celebrate and showcase the high volume of ideas and feedback from participating youth, and invite the local community in to provide additional input.

Given the extraordinary potential of the Lowline Lab as an interactive learning space, we have expanded and enhanced our Young Designers Program and integrated it with the Lowline Lab site. Through our enhanced inquiry-based curriculum, students will learn the principles of solar technology, horticulture, design and engineering. Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) in the context of an exciting urban design project that is both tangible and relevant to their lives. All classes are free of charge.

The classes, led by CityScience, consist of an engaging lecture on the Lowline and its relationship to the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), and interactive STEAM??-oriented activities for students that are designed to support scientific inquiry and creative visualization. Students??? feedback and work will be documented and shared with the broader Lowline community in early 2016.

The Lowline Young Designers Program has open enrollment for grades K-12. Classes are available Monday through Friday, between 9am – 6pm, for groups of up to 30 students. Register today as space is extremely limited! Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

The Education Committee is composed of a selected group of STEM professionals who have extensive experience in the field of STEAM and education. The Education Committee members advise the program in a variety of capacities that serve to enhance the program???s curriculum, operations and overall execution.
